The Will of John Hulles of Over Slaughter

In the name of God Amen the XIIth day of May in the year of Our Lord God One Thousand Six Hundreth and Three I John Hulles of Over Slaughter in the County of Gloucester yeoman make my last Will and Testament in manner and form following, that is to say

 

First I give and bequeath my soul to Almighty God and to Jesus Christ my only saviour and redeemer and my body to be buried in the church or churchyard of Over Slaughter, trusting to have it raised at the general resurrection

 

I give unto the church of Over Slaughter ten shillings and I give to the church of Blockley ten shillings

 

I give to the poor people of Over Slaughter twenty shillings and I give unto the poor of Blockley twenty shillings and I give unto the poor of Stow twenty shillings and I give unto the poor of Aston Magna otherwise called Hanging Aston in the Parish of Blockley ten shillings

 

I give unto my son Hugh Hulles my youngest son the sum of fifty pounds of lawful money of England to be paid in manner and form following, that is to say, ten pound within one month after my decease and forty pounds when he shall accomplish the full age of twenty and one years

 

I give and bequeath unto my second son John Hulles all that my tenement with the appurtenances unto the same belonging with two yards lands arable leas meadows pasture and commons with all and singular premises whatsoever thereunto belonging situate lying and being in Aston Magna als Hanging Aston aforesaid in the Parish of Blockley

 

Also my will is that my said son John shall enter upon the said tenement and the said two yards of arable lands with all the appurtenance at the age of twenty and one year

 

My will is further that Anne my wife and William Hulles my eldest son shall have the use of my tenement aforesaid and also the said two yards of arable lands with appurtenance until my said son John shall come unto the twenty and one years

 

My will is that Anne Hulles my wife shall hold the one moiety of the said tenement and two yards of arable land during the term of her natural life and after her decease the whole to remain to my said son John and to the heirs of his body lawfully begotten and for want of such issue of his body lawfully begotten to remain unto my son Hugh Hulles and to his heirs lawfully begotten and for want of the heirs of his body lawfully begotten to remain unto William my eldest son and Elizabeth my daughter and to their heirs provided always that if Anne Hulles my wife shall refuse to confirm any estate by me granted unto my son aforesaid, that is to say William and John according to the free intent purposes and meanings of this my last Will and Testament that then my wife shall pay unto my son John to his only use and behoof the full whole and entire sum of fifty pounds of good and lawful money of England to be paid within one month after my decease if she shall refuse to confirm his estate when he shall accomplish the full term of twenty and one years of age and such consideration as shall arise by allowance of the statute from the limit it shall be due

I give and bequeath unto Anne Hulles my wife my best featherbed with all things belonging to the same

 

I give and bequeath unto my eldest son William Hulles all my tenement and land with all my interest claims and demands which I have in Over Slaughter

 

I give and bequeath unto my son William all my carts ploughs and harrows together with all my plough timber together with all the standards about the house

 

I give unto my son William the prefermentship which I have to those of the church of Over Slaughter, all the rest of my goods and chattels movable and unmovable unbequeathed I give unto Anne my wife and William my son whom I make executors of this my last Will and Testament

 

I make Overseers of this my last Will and Testament William Slaughter gentlemen Thomas Collett, Anthony Collett and Nicholas Perratt 

 

John Hulles his mark witness hereunto William Slaughter Thomas Slaughter Chambers Slaughter and Charles Prouse

 

 

 

 

Thomas Collett (Ref. 1F8) of Over Slaughter was the older

brother of Anthony Collett (below)

 

Anthony Collett (Ref. 1F12 & 14F1) was also of Over Slaughter and

married Elizabeth Hules ten years before John Hulles made his Will,

Elizabeth Hules being the daughter of John Hulles

 

Nicholas Perratt was very likely the brother of Richard Perratt

who, with Thomas Collett (above) and his brother John Collett (Ref. 1F9),

were the joint Trustees of the Lands of Upper (Over) Slaughter
